What is Meditation?

Meditation has been around for about 5000 years. People have preached and practiced meditation ever since. It was discovered in India and has spread around every part of the world.

Meditation is a process of lightening up, of trusting the basic goodness of what we have, who we are, and realising that any wisdom that exists, exists in what we already have. We can lead our life so as to become more aware of who we are and what we’re doing rather than trying to improve or change. The key is to wake up, to become more alert, inquisitive and curious about ourselves. Meditation connects us to our inner self. It teaches us to tackle life’s difficulty skilfully and gracefully.

Good thoughts and Meditation are a Loop

Meditation

Our brains are constantly working and thinking. There is not a minute that it stops. Which is why it is necessary that we feed ourselves, positive and healthy thoughts. Having a positive attitude is vital and a major reason for an individual’s success, happiness, health and stable work-life balance.

It has been proven that people who stay more positive are healthy. They focus on taking care of themselves and work towards their goals. Having a positive attitude will help you be more productive at work and around the home. It will also help you socialise better and meet like-minded positive people. We all have hurdles and difficulties in our life sometimes. But it is important to look at them as a part and parcel and not let it affect you too much.

Everyone loves a positive person in the room, maybe it’s time to start being that person.

Subconscious and Meditation

Subconscious and Meditation

Our subconscious mind plays a major role in our day to day life. We focus on the conscious mind while the subconscious is the powerful layer underneath. It is a virtual memory bank with infinite memories stored since
childhood. The function of our subconscious mind is to store and retrieve data when needed. It also maintains our body temperature, keeps us breathing regularly and keeps our hearts beating at a certain rate. Our subconscious Mind is our guardian angel. All our habits, patterns, the way we think or act is stored in our subconscious mind and they guide us through our life. Which is why we have comfort zones. They are set patterns registered in our brains and it works towards keeping us in them.
Our subconscious mind causes us to feel emotional and physical discomfort whenever we attempt to do anything different, largely affecting our life, events and how we react to those. Listen to your inner voice but don’t forget to step out of your comfort zone occasionally.

Listen to your Gut

Listen to Your Gut

Recent studies found that the human gut is lined with more than 100 million nerve cells - it’s practically a brain of itself. And indeed, the gut actually talks to the brain, releasing hormones into the bloodstream that, signals the brain in real-time.

Whatever we are feeling, it is reflected in our stomach too. Our gut feels the drop in our stomach and also feels the butterflies. They say trust your gut feel or your instincts, because it is strongly connected to the subconscious brain.

There is also popular belief that if you eat and drink well, 96% of the illnesses can be avoided. They help digest our food and fight off unfriendly outsiders like viruses and bacteria.

This little brain in our gut, in connection with the big one in our skull, partly determines how we are feeling and plays key roles in certain diseases throughout the body.
It is intricately woven with our nervous system and has its own senses and reflexes. So yes, keep it healthy and listen to your gut!

Seven simple steps for Meditation

Meditation

Let’s get you started with the seven simple steps.

- Take out a few minutes from your day
- Sit in a comfortable posture
- Close your eyes and relax
- Start by taking slow and deep breaths
- Focus on your breath and physical being
- Observe your thoughts without any judgement
- Open your eyes to a calmer world

When you #mediate, you’ll feel calm and composed. It is a very simple practice and people unnecessarily complicate it. The basic idea of meditation is simple. Every time your mind begins to wander in thoughts, you simply bring your attention back to your breath (without trying to control the thought, or react to it). Every time you bring your attention back to your breath, you work out your “attention muscle”. You can meditate in mornings, evenings, or even while commuting. Any time of the day you prefer. You don’t need 20 minutes. You can start with 2-3 minutes each day. You don’t necessarily need to sit. You can meditate while laying down. Close your eyes and bring the focus on the sensation of breathing. The feeling in your nostril when you inhale. Keep the focus there. Feel your chest or belly expand. Listen to sounds around, be mindful of the #energy around you. Visualise that every time you breathe in, you are taking in good energy and when you exhale, you are letting out negative energy. Observe your thoughts and bring the attention back to breath.

Once you are done, open your eyes to a calmer world. You will start seeing positive effects of meditation from Day 1. So, please do try today.
