Food and Nutrition Tips During Self-Quarantine Include These Food Items in your diet. It’s been over a year and we are back to where we started, even worse. The pandemic has hit all of us hard; mentally, socially and physically. By now everyone has either experienced it themselves or seen a relative go through Covid. All the “Go Corona Go” slogans are fading away slowly as we try to come to terms with the corona virus as a way of life. 

While the world is fighting this tiny virus in all it’s capacity, we as droplets in an ocean of world population, can take some small steps to ensure that we are doing our bit to stay safe in these trying times. One way in which we can protect ourselves, and also the most basic way, is eating well and eating right.

Feed your body with the right kind of food as a precautionary measure against the virus. In times when the strength of your immune system is extremely vital, your diet should be an amalgamation of the following food items which will help your body to fight corona virus and stay fit and fabulous. (Please note that this is a suggestive list compiled from various sources and the actual effects of the food items may vary depending on each individual. Take inspiration and be wise!)

Fresh Fruits

Make sure that you consume at least 2 servings of fresh fruits every day in your diet. Try and include a seasonal fruit in your daily diet. Fruits provide us with dietary fiber, minerals, vitamins and antioxidants all of which help us to cleanse our system. So now, when you have a sweet craving try consuming a fruit instead to satisfy your taste buds.

Coconut water

In my region, the price of coconut water has shot up crazily, thanks to corona virus. Evidently, consumption of coconut water has immense importance in the corona times. The benefits of coconut water are manifold. It has various nutrients which help to detoxify the body. It is a great source of hydration and it is a good source of manganese which helps in regulating the metabolism of the body. Make sure you have your glass of coconut water daily to keep covid at bay. Remember, it’s better to consume coconut water before evening since post that it is known to cause acidity.

Turmeric Milk / Turmeric Water

Turmeric is gold for the body. This yellow substance works wonders for the body due to its anti-inflammatory properties. The benefits of turmeric have been known to all and sundry for years now. Including turmeric in your diet is however more important now than ever. It boosts the immune system and cleanses the body. You can have turmeric water on an empty stomach or turmeric milk at night which also helps you to relax and have a good sleep. Otherwise, just keep some turmeric latte (the fancy word for haldi ka doodh) in your fridge and sip on it hot or cold at any time of the day.

Pro Tip: Try and ensure that you consume turmeric with some form of fat, for example, turmeric with milk or turmeric with ghee. This helps in better absorption and hence increases its effectiveness. Also, turmeric contains curcumin as one of its key active ingredients which when combined with piperine (an active ingredient found in black pepper) enhances the absorption of turmeric in the body giving maximum health benefits.

Garlic Cloves

As a preventive measure against Covid-19, garlic can help a great deal in influencing the immune system in a positive way. It is one of the naturally found antibiotics having anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties. Chew your garlic (2 cloves) empty stomach and gulp it down with water to gain maximum benefit of this super food.

Nuts and Seeds

There are an ample of nuts and seeds available readily in the market like Almonds, Peanuts, Pumpkin Seeds, Hemp seeds, Sesame seeds, to name a few. We have been consuming nuts and seeds as a mid-meal snack or even in our cooking but did you know that they are high in fiber, proteins, good fats, vitamins and minerals which help your body in a myriad of ways. Fight Covid-19 by giving your body the right kind of nutrition by choosing nuts and seeds over high sugary and salty snacks. However, excess of anything is bad. Hence, make sure to consume your daily dose of nuts and seeds in moderation.

Try and include a portion of protein with each meal you consume since proteins not only help with hormonal balance but also ensure muscle recovery which in turn increases stamina and keeps you physically strong. Fermented foods like kimchi, curd and certain kinds of cheese are natural sources of probiotics which help restore the balance in your body. Have your glass of buttermilk or a bowl of curd daily, both of which are convenient to consume and easily available.

It is known to all that our mind and body are related with each other. What we feed our mind, is reflected in our body in some way.
