Jump to Jaggery after your Meals

In the wintertime, we often feel cold and more dry. Our skin gets dry, our sinuses begin to dry out, and even our joints dry out. As a result, the mucus membranes in the body start to become irritated and produce more mucus—and mucus is a breeding ground for colds, flu, and bacteria. Any food that’s packed with nutrients and helps detox the body is great for your immune system and so, jaggery is believed to be one of the best immune-boosting foods available to humankind. This is also the reason why jaggery is consumed more during winter when your body needs that extra immunity boost to help keep cold, flu and other diseases at bay. It is made with sugarcane in North India; date, coconut or other palm trees in East, West and South India. Jaggery, no matter which part of India you hail from, is an integral part of our food culture.

Find your Roots in your Plate

Every meal that you have in winter should have root vegetables in raw or cooked form. While, carrots can be enjoyed raw as salad but sweet potato is extremely delicious when slightly boiled.

The common knowledge is whichever plant grows underground is a root vegetable. Actually, a true root vegetable must also function as the root of a plant. For example, onions grow underground but it is not a root and hence, not a root vegetable. A root absorbs moisture and essential nutrients from the soil, which is why winter root vegetables are SO nutrient-dense!

Winter is Coming. Go Nuts!

The winter season is great to feast on nuts and seeds. While you can eat a few of them during the summers as well, most of these dried fruits produce heat in the body. Nuts are rich in heart-healthy polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats, which lower LDL or "bad" cholesterol. Digesting good fats generate heat and hence, the cold weather makes it suitable for people to eat nuts without getting internal heat. Most nuts can nourish and strengthen kidneys, brain, and heart. In addition, eating nuts in winter helps keep warm and improve physical quality. make sure that you have fresh nuts and seeds instead of those that have added salt or sugar, or are coated with chocolate. Eating those can definitely lead to unnecessary weight gain.
